Summer Day Camp Where Children Learn and Have Fun While Developing Social Skills.
Discovery is a small nurturing camp where your child receives individualized attention. One of our goals is to create an environment in which campers have fun while growing as individuals and as members of a group through participation in a variety of activities.
Campers are grouped in small age appropriate groups where they receive individualized attention while participating in: swimming (twice daily), fine arts, sports, nature, ropes course and special events. Campers are challenged to try new skills that are taught in a non-competitive atmosphere as they form memorable relationships with their group and group leaders.

Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
2015 will be our 31st year! It is great to have the children of our original campers and staff attending camp. It makes us feel good that those original people have enough trust in the experience that they had to want their children to have a similar experience.
What is your primary product or service?
Summer day camp for children ages four to fourteen.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I have worked at day camps since 1967. My degree is in education from the University Of Michigan. After graduating I was a teacher as well as working at camp during the summers. After attaining tenure in school district #113 I decided to go into camping year round. A good day camp gives children the opportunity to socialize, grow as individuals, be independent, build their self confidence, learn great skills, and have fun.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Most campers attend our camp for 4 or more weeks, so there is a sense of group. Our camp is small - and campers are placed in small groups (usually 7-10 per group). This helps campers know their group mates and the other campers at camp.
We have an exceptional and innovative swimming program. Campers swim twice a day. Each camper has a daily swim lesson in a group of 2-4 campers. 90% of our staff are certified Starfish Swim Instructors -- so the quality of lessons is different than at most campers and summer programs.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
1 location in Indian Creek. We will not expand. Our goal is to serve our small group of campers well.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Milwaukee Ave North to Rt #$5, Go west 4 miles. We are 20 minutes from the northern edge of Northbrook.
What type of payments do you accept?
We have a variety of payment plans. Parents pay by check, Mastercard, Visa, or Discovery.
Which areas do you service?
From the lake west to Round Lake. Lake Forest or Gurnee South to Glenview. We do have campers who come from farther than that, but our buses don't go out of the above area. Every year we have a variety of international campers. Last year we had children from Columbia, Mexico, Qatar, Jordan, London, Singapore, and Taiwan.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Ilise and David Schwartzwald own and operate Discovery Day Camp
What are your hours of operation?
Summer hours are 7:30 to 6. Winter hours are shorter.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
Their child learned to swim, achieved the top of our climbing wall, and made some wonderful new friends.
